Made For Intimacy PDF Print E-mail

Danny's sermon from Sunday is now online.  The link is here.

In keeping with the theme that Pastor John has been following the last several weeks of characteristics of Unauthentic Christians, here is one that I believe is fundamental to our Christian experience.  An unauthentic Christian will:

go through the motions of religious activities and can even live an upright life…

but are not actively seeking a deeper intimacy with God or are even aware of their need for it.

A broad look at the Biblical record reveals that God has always been intent on having an intimate relationship with His people:

1)  At creation: Intimacy unhindered - Genesis 1:27; 3:8

2)  In the garden: Intimacy rejected and marred Genesis - 3:8

3)  To Israel: Intimacy offered -  Exodus 19:5,6

4)  At the cross: Intimacy restored - John 14:15-18, Ephesians 2:13

5)  In Heaven: Intimacy perfected - Revelation 21:3-4

As a child, I recall my mother saying to me on numerous occasions, “don’t spoil your appetite.” As many children do, I would come home from school famished and ready to eat anything in sight. My natural tendency was to go to that corner of the counter top that usually housed the homemade goodies and snacks, and gorge myself.  I remember, at one point, finally getting what she was talking about. If I filled myself with sweets and snacks before a well prepared wholesome meal, I would not be able to fully appreciate or enjoy the real meal that was soon to come.

Inborn in each of us, whether we recognize it or not, is an insatiable God hunger. We can fill our souls with all kinds of stimuli, some good and some not so good, but it is only a deep and personal connection with God that will fully satisfy.  Jesus says in John 7:37 …if anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink.” My prayer is that we would respond to His voice in our hearts and drink deeply of His presence.
